What to Watch for in Chinese Labeling Rules

The Chinese-label requirement

A Chinese-language label is mandatory for packaged foods. The label is expected to display the following information in a format that complies with Chinese standards:

The most frequently stumbled-upon points

Nutrition facts table. The format, units, and order of presentation must comply with the Chinese standard — the format used in your own country cannot simply be copied.

Date presentation. The format for displaying the production date and expiry/shelf-life information (year-month-day order, expressions such as "X months from the production date," etc.) must be arranged according to Chinese regulations.

Claims. Terms such as "organic," "natural," and "additive-free" may only be used when the relevant certification and declaration conditions are met. Claims added to the label without supporting documentation can cause problems during customs or market inspection.

GACC registration number. The number issued to the producer facility once registration is completed; in general practice, it must appear in the correct format on export documents and on the product's inner/outer packaging.

Why is pre-shipment inspection essential?

Reviewing the label draft before shipment prevents costly returns. If a labeling error is discovered after production is complete and shipment has been planned, direct cost items such as relabeling or shipment delay arise.

How does the review process work?

Under our Product and Label Compliance Review service, content, packaging, labeling, origin, shelf life, analysis, and document requirements undergo a preliminary review before shipment.
